New York City faces a crisis at Rikers Island, where worsening conditions under Mayor Eric Adams have led to at least 33 deaths of people detained there during his tenure. Although Black and Latinx people make up 53% of the city’s population, they represent nearly 90% of jail admissions. Rikers has become the city’s largest mental health facility, yet over half of those detained receive inadequate treatment. We remain part of the coalition urging the Mayor to follow the law to close Rikers and invest in housing, healthcare, education, and jobs to ensure true community safety.
